Marcus Alipate has spent much of his life moving between places, cultures, and disciplines. From a professional basketball career that took him across the world to his work in fashion, design, and business, each experience has contributed to his perspective. Today, he calls California home, with his Tongan heritage remaining an important part of his identity.
Basketball was an early introduction to the world beyond what he knew. After playing collegiately in Minnesota, Alipate competed professionally across China, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, while also representing Tonga internationally as captain of the national basketball team. Beyond competition, the game introduced him to different cultures, relationships, and experiences that continue to influence his life and work.
His interests eventually expanded into creative strategy, brand development, marketing, and partnerships. Through collaborations involving Nike, Cal Athletics, Team Tonga, and independent creative teams, he has contributed to projects across sport, fashion, and culture.
Alongside his collaborative work, Alipate has continued building independently. His ventures include SMOOVE UNION, a luxury brand informed by his personal taste and experiences, and West x Change, a platform bringing people together through food, culture, and shared experiences.
While his work moves across different disciplines, his approach remains consistent: an appreciation for people, thoughtful ideas, and the freedom to create on his own terms.
